Depression

Mood Disorders

Some common mood disorders are:    

  • Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) —  this type of depression typically occurs from fall to early spring. This is due to fewer hours of daylight and can trigger a depressive mood.       
  • Cyclothymic disorder — has similar symptoms to bipolar disorder, but is less extreme.        
  •   Major depressive disorder — this disorder is evident by consistent, long periods of deep sadness.         
  •  Persistent depressive disorder (dysthymia) — this disorder is a chronic type of milder depression       
  •  Bipolar disorder — or Manic-Depression, is a type of mood disorder characterized by alternating mania and depression.

Anxiety Disorders

 While occasional anxiety is normal, anxiety disorders are characterized by more intense and frequent anxiety. Anxiety disorders can interfere with the way you want to live your life and can affect your relationships, daily tasks, and performance at work or school.        
     
      Some common anxiety disorders are:          

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder-  this disorder is characterized by excessive anxiety and can include symptoms such as restlessness, irritability, difficulty concentrating, sleep issues, fatigue, and inability to stop worrying.       
  • Panic Disorder-  this disorder is characterized by reoccurring panic attacks, which are sudden periods of intense fear that can include a pounding heart, increased heart rate, trembling, shaking, and shortness of breath. Sufferers of panic attacks often feel out of control during a panic attack, are worried about when the next panic attack may occur, and may avoid places where panic attacks have happened before.        
  •  Social Anxiety Disorder- this disorder is is characterized by a fear of social situations in which the sufferer expects to feel judged, rejected, or embarrassed. Social anxiety disorder can include symptoms like feeling anxious when around people, difficulty having conversations, intense fear of being judged, feeling sick to your stomach before and during social situations, and worrying for extended periods of time about an upcoming social event.       
  • Phobias- this disorder is characterized by excessive and unreasonable fears that affect daily life, normal routines, and may increase stress in a relationship.       
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)-           this disorder is characterized by a persistent re-living of a traumatic event, including dreams and intrusive memories. Some common symptoms include difficulty sleeping, lack of concentration, and avoidance of anything that could be related to the past traumatic event.
